Jason Kao Hwang marvelous accessible jazz Jason Kao Hwang – SING HOUSE:  Marvelous?  Accessible?  You BET, folks… I’ve reviewed a LOT of Jason’s improvised jazz work, and this is (by far) the closest I’ve ever heard his compositions come to “mainstream”… & he’s got players who totally understood what he was trying to do here – in addition to Jason’s highly creative violin and viola work, you’ve also got Andrew Drury on drums, Ken Filiano on string bass, Chris Forbes on piano and Steve Swell on trombone – & if you’re not sure you believe me, be sure to listen to the high-energy closer, “Inscribe“… yes, it’s dense, rich and thick, but not overwhelming, and will capture many a listener (jazz or elsewise), to be sure.  These cats just SMOKE on this track, and their “changes” are unbelievable! 

Jason himself says (in the promo sheet) “the unique voice of each musician is empowered to individually interpret” and “to become an originating spirit”… truly, folks, this is one of the most amazing jazz improvisation sets I’ve ever heard, and the best I’ve ever heard (yet) from Jason… and my pick for personal favorite of the four (long) tracks offered up is (without a doubt) the 12:02 “Dream Walk“… each of the instruments is given it’s own space to “sing”, and sing they do… in the language of visions previously unspeakable, the players bring their inner souls to the surface to awaken your dreams and take you to new horizons.  One word of advice, though… be SURE you block out a full hour, and listen to this with your headphones on, so you can absorb each and every note these folks play!
