Chinese musician of origins (but been born in Illinois), Hwang has working a lot not only in jazz field: beyond to have given its contribution to Butch Morris, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill and William Parker wrote for the Theater, for the Cinema, for the Television and has composed chamber music. 
  
Stories Before Within is the second disk of its excellent quartet Edge (the first one was Edge, gone out for the Asian Improv Records in 2005) with that proposes a music that, like performance the title, develops a plot from the long horizontal throw and an interesting sequence of melodic and harmonic plans superimposed but often off-set, that create a dynamic result and very stimulating. On this back installation, all' inside of the same piece, alternate different solo theme and precious connections moments. 
  
Beyond to the obvious you recall to the folklore eastern (" Cloud Call" and "Third Sight") will listen to flashes of groove (" From East Sixth Street" and still "Third Sight"), various turns of jazz (" Walking Pictures"), an intense ballad based on a long musical poetic meter (" Embers") and a dynamic collective improvisation. Hwang recalls in the phrasing the founder of free violin, but in the stamp is essentially son of the academy. 
Harsh but to the fertile meantime it is the trumpet of Taylor Ho-Bynum, while the stout lower part of Filiano is the authentic supporting column of the group.

Tra i tantissimi violinisti apparsi negli ultimi tempi sulla scena jazzistica o nelle sue immediate vicinanze va certamente preso in considerazione anche il nome del cinquantunenne Jason Kao Hwang. Musicista di origini cinesi (ma nato in Illinois), Hwang ha lavorato molto non solo in campo jazzistico: oltre ad aver dato il suo contributo a Butch Morris, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill e William Parker ha scritto per il Teatro, per il Cinema, per la Televisione e ha composto musica da camera. 
  
Stories Before Within è il secondo disco del suo ottimo quartetto Edge (il primo era Edge, uscito per la Asian Improv Records nel 2005) con cui propone una musica che, come recita il titolo, sviluppa una trama dalla lunga gittata orizzontale e 
un interessante sequenza di piani melodici e armonici sovrapposti ma spesso sfalsati, che creano un risultato dinamico e molto stimolante. Su questo impianto di fondo, all'interno dello stesso pezzo, si alternano diverse concatenazioni tematiche e preziosi momenti solistici 
Oltre agli evidenti richiami al folklore orientale ("Cloud Call" e "Third Sight") ascolterete sprazzi di groove ("From East Sixth Street" e ancora "Third Sight"), caracollanti portamenti jazz ("Walking Pictures"), un'intensa ballad basata su una lunga metopea musicale ("Embers")e una dinamica improvvisazione collettiva. Hwang richiama nel fraseggio i capiscuola del violino free, ma nel timbro è essenzialmente figlio dell'Accademia. 
  
Aspra ma al contempo feconda è la tromba di Ho-Bynum, mentre il corpulento basso di Filiano è l'autentica colonna portante del gruppo.
